POST STUDY WORKPERMIT OPPORTUNITIES

The U.S. post-study work option is called Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows F-1 student visa holders to gain temporary employment directly related to their field of study. Graduates typically receive 12 months of work authorization, which can be extended by an additional 24 months (totaling 36 months) if they majored in a qualified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field

Duration: The duration for post-study work in the U.S. (Optional Practical Training or OPT) depends on the student’s field of study:

  • Non-STEM Graduates: Eligible for 12 months of OPT.
  • STEM Graduates: Eligible for an additional 24-month extension (STEM OPT), granting a total of 36 months (3 years) of post-study work authorization.

Students are eligible for this work authorization after completing each successively higher degree level (e.g., 12/36 months after a Bachelor’s, and another 12/36 months after a Master’s).

Flexibility: The main U.S. post-study work option, Optional Practical Training (OPT), offers graduates a flexible path to gain experience, allowing for multiple job types as long as the work directly relates to their major and totals a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Eligibility:  To be eligible, students must maintain valid F-1 status, have completed at least one academic year of full-time study, and file their application within a specific window. Non-STEM graduates get 12 months, while STEM graduates can extend this for a total of 36 months, all while adhering to strict unemployment limits.
